Experimental study of Gastric Ulcer Production in Rats

Abstract
Since 1945, when Harry Shay and his associates first published their report of acute gastric ulceration in the forestomach of rats induced experimentally, simply ligating pylorus, numerous studies by many authors have been reported.
The author studied of the Shay rats and found some correlation between ulcer formation and duration following pyloric ligation, weight of rats, influence of histamine injection and vagotomy. Followings are the results obtained;
1) Correlation between gastric ulcer formation and duration following pyloric ligation being as follows; a) 60% of rats developed ulcers in the forestomach in 20 hrs. after pyloric ligation in 24-hour fasting rats group.
b) 86%, 42%, 25% and 20% of rats developed ulcers in 18 hrs, 10 hrs, 8 hrs and 6 firs respectively after pyloric ligation in 48-hour fasting group.
2) Relatively shorter time is required in producing ulcers in the lighter weight Shay rats group.
3) No demonstrable influence is observed as far as ulcer-foramation in Shay rats is concerned upon histamine injection.
4) No Shay¢¥ rat that was undergone a vagotomy developed an ulcer
